Frequest Unexplained Disconnections

$

Ok guys so where do I start, First I just want to say im up very late gaming after my 3rd random drop tonight and I am extremely tierd, I have come searching this little place of wonder for an answer to this frustraiting issue, Ill try my best to explain everything , I have come to my wits end with orcon and their lack of help on this issue. I feel like everytime I ring them im going in circles, no investigation or ticket provides any answer! They have been monitoring my connection for about 2 weeks now and they tell me there is no disconnections on the internet, which I can confirm in my router internet uptime.

Ok so I am on Orcon Fiber, I have been for about 1 year or more and I am a heavy internet user and rely on a solid connection for the games I play ( lol try telling orcon this, apparently 2-3 disconnections a day is acceptable on their terms ), How ever they say this isnt my issue, This issue started about 2months ago, everyday at times that seem to be reoccurring , a good example of this drop is , Ill be on teamspeak3 and playinga game, i lose connection to server and ts, almost within 5-10 seconds its back up, no logs of downtime but local area network detects no internet, this can happen to everyone using the internet all wired connections 1 wireless laptop. At times it is very strange as one computer doesnt get effected by this issue and remains connected to the same apps like ts and game servers etc, we have ruled out the router as they have sent us a new one. I am a end with this issue, I know that ive done everything right on my end setting up my connections I just need some advice, Please feel free to ask me any questions.

Goodnight everyone.

Orcon White Router Firewall

In the few days I have had the Orcon White router, Ive somehow uploaded more data than I had done in the previous 3 weeks combined. Most worrying is today where I woke up and logged on at 10 am to find I had already uploaded 2.2GB of data (PC wasnt on but NAS was, though NAS is not configured for remote access).Does anyone have any experience with setting up a firewall on the white router, there is next to no info on the NAT security page and I fully admit I do not know what I am doing when it comes to firewalls.

Email changes

My parents received an email from Orcon yesterday afternoon that states their email account will be terminated in one month because it has not been accessed in over 12 months. This is absolutely incorrect - the account is used all the time. I called the helpdesk and was told to ignore the email. I'm still worried that if I don't do anything, email access will be terminated. Can I get something in writing that will be more convincing? A copy of the email is below: Hi <redacted>, We've recently made some changes to our email service and updated our email policy. We wanted to let you know how these changes impact the email service you receive from Orcon. A more detailed view of our new email policy can be found in Section 6 of the Orcon General Terms and Conditions located athttp://www.orcon.net.nz/about/terms/category/general. What are the important changes? A couple of the more important changes to the Orcon email policy are the implementation of archiving and deleting of unused email accounts. Orcon will archive any inactive mailboxes after 6 months and delete unused mailboxes after 12 months. We can see that the free email service on the Orcon username '<redacted>' has not been accessed in over 12 months. If you do not wish to use this service, then simply take no action. On Monday 27th of October 2014 we will be cancelling the service and any email on this account will no longer be accessible. If you still wish to use this service or have an email forward to another email address, then it is important that you log in, before the date given above, to the Orcon webmail service or use POP / IMAP from the main email address in your email application, at least once every 6 months to keep the account active. You can access the Orcon webmail from the main page of our website www.orcon.net.nz For more information on setting up your Orcon email in an email application using POP or IMAP, please visit the Email section of our Support page on the Orcon website: http://www.orcon.net.nz/support/wizard Please call our Helpdesk on 0800 13 14 15 if you have any questions, or need assistance with anything. They would be happy to help. Regards, The Team @ Orcon

Serious doubts about Orcon traffic records

Finding it hard to reconcile my down/up loads with my billing (Orcon 30/10 fibre)). Twice I have recently updated comps from win8 to 8.1 and have seen a 8GB spike in my usage both times. 8.1 is 3.6GB and if you add 400MB for other updates you get approx 4GB. I have also recently synced 13.8GB to my Google Drive and saw a 20GB spike in usage for that day.Today I did a test of a 3.17GB upload to Google Drive and that has just given me a spike of over 7GB. I am the only regular user and don't do downloads of music, films etc and no torrenting. The spikes seen on my billing are pretty obviously related to known abnormal traffic usage but they just don't match the actual traffic. This has caused me to up my plan so I hope it hasn't unnecessarily cost me.Maybe a kind Orcon guy could take a look?

Pretty much as the title states. I used to be able to access Sky UK streams via Unblock US, but Orcon Global mode registers as being in New Zealand when trying to access the site.

Guys, loving global mode and Netflix, have moved from 30GB to 100GB and will need to go unlimited this month!I have Sky + sport + soho costing me $112/month and unlimited at $95 puts me at $207/month.Unlimited naked fibre with Vodafone + Vodafone TV + same sky channels costs $160 (I have a VF mobile).Lets say unotelly or similar costs $10 per month. That's still about $40 cheaper per month.I don't need a landline at home...any plans to introduce naked fibre plans?Cheers

Wireless NAS Access to Orcon Router

Hi AllHoping one of you wonderful people will be able to help me as I have exhausted all options.I have recently bought a QNAP HS-210 NAS. Due to the current layout of my flat the router is in a flatmates room which is no where near mine so am having to (reluctently) run this through a wifi dongle. When I set up that NAS I did so at my fathers house and tested and it worked fine on his Wifi and there were no issues. At my flat it works fine when plugged into the router but as this isn't my room I am unable to leave the unit in there.

I have not come home from holiday to set up on the wireless in my flat and although its showing that it is connected to the wireless it is not allowing packets to be sent.I have gone through both the NAS and my Orcon Genius Black Router and can't find what could be stopping it.Ive tried some of the following:-Defining a specific channel as I noticed the neighbours using the same or close to it.-Disabling the firewall on the router-Adding it to the Demilitarized zone address-Giving it a defined IPApologies for the noob question. I am still new to this kind of thing and am trying to learn more about this. Thank you in advance for your help.

Orcon Genius syncing to ONT at slow speed

So I have a UFB Fibre connection at home with Orcon. I am on the 100 / 50 unlimited plan and it's great for working at home, running webinars, youtube-hungry teenagers, etc.Certainly can't complain about the speeds I'm seeing, except I have some weird behaviour.I'm using the Orcon-supplied "Genius" router, which seems to be OK except for needing a restart now and then. When I re-start it, strange thing happens: The speedtest stays around 95 mbps down, but drops to 10mbps upIf I either power-cycle the ONT at the same time as the router, or power the router down, disconnect the ethernet to the ONT, power up the router then plug the ethernet back into the ONT, the problem usually won't happen (but sometimes still does).Yeah OK maybe I'm being a bit precious except that working from home the difference in speed becomes noticeable, shifting large files across VPNs etc. - this was why I sprung for the 100/50 connection in the first place.Anyone else seeing this behaviour or got any thoughts? <countdown to "get a FritzBox" in 5.... 4.... 3....> ??

DNS issues and intermittent lag.

Every few days my DNS seems to fail for domain name or two, it is frequently google.co.nz or facebook's image host.ipconfig /flushdns fixes the issue temporarily but it comes back, while nslookup seems to work fine (chrome refuses to load), the issue is present on two machines on the network, though I haven't test anything other than Chrome.the Linux/XBMC computer also has intermittent issues that could be related to DNS as well.Last night during gaming I also experienced some 2000~ms lag that I've only experienced during the issues last mouth with gaming.I've don't believe this could have been caused on my side of the net (super saturating upload with bittorrent seems to only net 300-400ms top)The Genius White Router also seems to refuse to work in 40hz mode for more than a day.

Hi there,I have just signed up with Orcon and still got my 'old' FB 7390 here which I'd like to use for VOIP also.I already tried a few things, like setting the MAC of the FB to the Orcon Routers, extracted the VDSL login (and used it ;)) and also set the VLAN to 10.But so far I did not get any joy with that, as the FB always says not connected and so forth.I am out of ideas (or better google suggestions) now - could anyone provide some guidance in this regard?Much appreciated. Thanks in advance,Marcus

Are Orcon capturing all DNS requests with Global mode.If I try to request DNS via 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 or 208.67.222.220 or 208.67.222.222 it always returns the same result as Orcon's DNS servers

How to configure your Orcon Mail Guard

$

Hi all, Here is my guide to Orcon's anti-spam system. I will be using Orcon webmail and Orcon Mail Guard in this tutorial. Log into your Orcon Mail Guard https://mailguard.orcon.net.nz/canit/index.php Enter your Orcon credentials: The first thing you would want to do is setup your preferences.

Opt In/Out - If you don't want to use the anti-spam system you can come in here and click on 'Click to opt OUT of spam-scanning'

Quarantine Settings - here you can set your quarantine settings for when mail comes in.

Spam threshold - This value is the tolerance set for receiving spam. I have mine set at 70 you set this to whatever your feel comfortable with.

Only tag spam - This is a very IMPORTANT option. This will hold any messages that it suspects that is spam and it will not come to your mailbox.

Once your happy with it click on 'Submit Changes'

Notification - here you set how you receive the notification for when an email is held on suspicion of being a spam email.

Email address - enter the email address that you want the notification to go to

Notification type - there is a few types you can select from the drop down list. For personally I like the 'Clickable Webform'. Pick the option that suits you.

Notification Times - Enter the time you want to receive the email if there is things blocked. I have my set to send me an email once a day at 8AM. Again set it to suit your needs and requirements.

Notification Days - I have selected all the days. Again set it to suit your needs and requirements.

Click 'Submit Changes'

**The other options you can change if you want I left it as is.

My Addresses - here you can add other email address that you have example if you have aliases you can add it in here.

Click 'Submit Changes'

Now that you have setup your preferences you can start to block the spam emails. I will first show you the easiest way to block it and then I will show you some advance blocking that you can do.

So today I received a spam in my email.

Firstly start by logging into your webmail.

https://www.orcon.net.nz/site/weblogin

In your inbox you can see the spam email unless you deleted it.

If you go inside the message you can clearly see that it's a spam email. (**If you ever see an attachment in a spam email please DO NOT OPEN the attachment)

I normally open a notepad and start pasting the spam information for example:

What email did it come from: Dianne18@post.com

Click on view full header and get the X-CanIt-Geo: ip=64.8.100.34

Anything in the email body that I can block: GET PAID TODAY! / keyv.in

Login to your Orcon Mail Guard you will notice that in first screen has the 'Accepted and Reject List'

If you click on the on the drop down menu you get two options

Always accept mail from - Put the email or IP address here if you know the sender and want to receive mail from them example: friends or family

Always reject mail from - Put the email or IP address here for people you don't know and that send you spam

Since I am blocking the spam simply add the domain and IP in there Select from the drop down 'Always reject mail from' and click 'Add'

You will receive a confirmation once it has been added as per below.

Now that you have added it you can go to Rules -> Custom Rules and check to see if the email I blocked is there.

I can see that that the email has been blocked. I have put a comment next to it so I can clearly identify it.

There is a specific actions that you can do when an email comes in you can have a play with those settings.

If you block the whole domain click on the domains. It's exactly the same as above you can put a comment etc

Now the custom rules are great as you can customize and block specific things. So from the spam email I got 'GET PAID TODAY!' stood out.

I selected that this data will be in the body of the email and gave it a score of 100 and put in a comment. Remember how I set in the start of the guide on in preference my spam threshold is 70, since you're setting it to 100 it will put the message on hold.

Click on 'Add'

Click on 'Submit Changes'

When an email comes in matching what you have setup you will get an email notification. Remember how I set this up with the days and times in the start of the guide.

Whatever you setup there you will get an email to tell you that there is 'Pending Messages'

I logged back into my webmail to see what was blocked.

My email domain is being spoofed hence the sender is my domain name. You can see what country it's coming from and what action you can take.

This is all spam so I will just click on 'Reject All as Spam'

This will take you to the Orcon Mail Guard page to let you know that it's all rejected.

I hope that this guide was helpful to you. If you spot any mistakes etc let me know.

Hello all,Since my last post here : http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=82&topicid=147050&page_no=2my vdsl connection has been working great! great download speed, latency and stability. down speed was consistently above 45mbpsjust a month ago i started noticing frequent disconnection/re synchronization, especially during 6pm to 12am window. i can almost always expect a disconnection for up to 5 minutes around 10pm to 11pm. the connection icon appears to be a computer icon with yellow exclamation markthe downspeed has suddenly reduced as well, few days ago i only managed 20mbps+, half of waht i used to getmodem was restarted for barely a day, and here's the latest status :
