Internet Cuts in and out whenever I want to use it.

Hello, and welcome to my post.

I've had this issue for a very long time - 6 months or so. Simply put, my internet cuts out every time I go to use it - ie, if I open Facebook/Youtube/Gmail etc, the page will load only slightly (even trying to post this was a mere!). It's as if there is some sort of 'cap' on the internet which stops if there is too much data being processed. I'm a Web Developer so having intermittent internet is a massive fail.

Now When I say cut out, I mean to say it drops for about 30 seconds before coming back online. It drops for all computers in my house. It doesn't come up with the red x, but the yellow ! on my deskop - which I think means having connection problems, but there is internet.

My computer specs:- Windows 10 Desktop- Using a netcomm powerline - ethernet through power in your house- NOT using wifi

My internet specs:- Orcon unlimited VDSL- DSL connection has been installed in my wall about 3 years ago

What I have had done:- Line technician has come out and can't find any faults with my setup- New modem setup about a month ago- Tried to fix the windows 10 power management issue but the option doesn't exist.

Fibre is now available in my area, and I have a technician coming to install it within a month or so. But I want to see if there's something I can do in the meantime. I can't work with internet like this.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Configuring TP-Link Archer C9 (AC1900) on UFB

Has anyone had any luck getting Orcon UFB to run on an Archer C9? From what I can see it should work, but I'm not having much luck.

I've got it set up as DHCP/Dynamic IP, no specified DNS Servers, and VLAN Tagging set (under IPTV, enabled VLAN TAG for Internet Service: is enabled, set at 10. Used dummy values for IP Phone and IP TV, then set LAN1-4 Modes to Internet).

ONT is working fine, it just won't connect to the internet. All other lights on the router are blue except for the sad amber for internet.

I use the above router with native WIFI enabled. The issue I have is that the router offers WIFI to the n standard, but the 2 PCs and 1 laptop I have all have WIFI devices that have compatibility with the ac standard along with sundry phones whose connectivity speeds are not a concern. I have an IDE hard drive in a USB enclosure that is connected to one of the USB ports on the router - used for automated local backups from the PCs and laptop with Idrive software. The router was originally supplied as a 'Genius' product so I have a VOIP landline involved. All devices connect via WIFI

The issue I have is that the router is a WIFI speed bottleneck. In principle this sucks. As far as I know there is no Orcon-supplied router that has WIFI to the ac standard for my current requirements. My address shows that Fibre is due in November 2018 - near enough to be a factor in planning but too far away for immediate consideration. I simply dont know whether the NF4V is used by Orcon Fibre customers.

Plan A would be that I disable WIFI on the NF4V and use a mesh AP plugged into a LAN port on the router. Plan B is that a fibre-enabled router comes with ac-standard WIFI, although this does not deliver mesh-related features. My questions are as follows:

- When Fibre becomes available will Orcon replace the NF4V with a router that has WIFI ac built-in?

- Are there other options, both now and when Fibre is available, that I should consider?

Gigantic Fibre with NF4V

Howdy

Just been upgraded to Gigantic Fibre, should I be chasing Orcon up for the Fritzbox or should my NF4V be sufficient? First lot of speed tests have peaked at 200/200, I notice the upload starts off at 1000+ but then throttles down to 150 - 200 mbit.

Just switched to Orcon fibre and under settings the max clients allowed is set to 16 - seems rather low. Does anyone know how many clients the router can actually take? I've been having issues whereby some laptops wont connect and think this could possibly be why. Cheers

Orcon Router Netcom NF4V problems

I have fibre and netcom NF4V router. I also use Google Home. As of two days ago my Google Home devices (3 of them) have all stopped working complaining of no being configured

Spoke to Google who asked if there have been any changes to Router in that time.

I am wondering if orcon have pushed out some changes that may have caused problems with the Google homes devices connecting to Network.

Google have made several suggestions and we have blown away all the Google Home settings and started from scratch but no luck. I looked in the router logs and noticed this while we were trying setup." alt="">

Any ides please

VDSL speed drop from 35Mbps to 5 Mbps. Restart modem temporary bring speed back to 35Mbps

I signed up unlimited VDSL with Orcon last November and everything was working fine except odd disconnection once or twice a month. I didn't mind as it was a lot worse when I was with Spark. One of reason we tried different ISP i.e. Orcon

However, this month I have experienced massive speed drop from ~35 Mbps to 5Mbps Download (Ookla peed test), but no disconnection. Restarting my D-link router does not help, but restarting Orcon NF4v Modem solve the issue temporarily. At beginning of month I will need to restart modem 1 or twice a day, and yesterday 1 or twice an hour. It looks like it's issue with modem, but with Orcon I am unable to swap it over with my own modem to test.

Contacted Orcon, but they want to contact Chorus to check line. We had Chorus to check the disconnection issue when we were with Spark last 2 years. We paid 4 or 5 times totaling more than $500 and the issue was not solved. In addition, The internet was working okay the first 3 months thus not too keen to try Chorus again. Orcon also suggested that could be internal line issue, which could also be a possibility. However, could restarting modem resolving speed issue that's caused by internal line?

I have also include the diagnostic test I done.

I did a search on geekzone, and there was someone with similar issue, but the it was closed and no solution. Just wondering if anyone experience the same issue or have suggestion what the issue would be. Thanks again in advance with all your suggestion and help.

Kind Regards

James

Need help with Asus DSL-AC68u on Gigantic Fibre

So I'm trying to use my Asus DSL-AC68U modem/router with my current fibre plan. I have got an internet connection after following the steps here

https://www.pbtech.co.nz/ASUSISPSettings

I also tried using this thread for help but seeing as its on spark there's nothing really relative there for me

https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=160038

My issue is that when i do a speed test I'm only getting 20mbps download and 9.9mbps upload. Prior to using the modem today i was getting around 900 down and 500 up. My settings look exactly like they do in the picture on the pbtech link

Any help would be much appreciated and I'm not too tech savvy so if it's anything technical if you can simplify instructions would be awesome.

Wifi calling won't work through Orcon NF4V modem and fibre

I bought a new 2 Degree's Samsung S8 phone in February this year. Since then I have been trying to get 2 Degrees wifi calling working through my home wifi without success. The phone switches to wifi calling and works on wifi calling when I am connected to other wifis including a public wifi and a Spark hot spot set up on a Samsung Galaxy A3 2016 here at home. However, it does not work on my wifi nor my daughter's wifi which is a similar set up but 200 odd kilometres away from mine.

Both of these wifi systems use an Orcon supplied NetCom VDSL/ADSL WiFi Gigabit NF4V Modem Router connected via fibre to the internet.

I have put the problem to Orcon's online help but have ended up with them stating --- "I have queried this with our support teams and was told that base on what you have mentioned, this is an issue in regards to port forwarding and we do not provide support for this."

I guess one of the options for getting wifi calling working in my new office that is located in an area of bad cellphone coverage is to change my ISP. I am reluctant to do this as I have had good reliable service from Orcon for about ten years now. I would prefer to get wifi calliing working over my existing wifi.

I raised the question on the 2degrees wifi calling forum regarding what the requirements for wifi calling are and got the following response from SaltyNZ :

"IKE (tunnel setup) is UDP 500 and then UDP 4500 for IPSec main tunnel when behind a NAT. Your router must properly handle UDP NAT - you'll have to have one that does stateful connection tracking. I have an NF4V but I only use it as a PPPoE modem, not a router, so I can't comment on whether they can be configured appropriately or not.

You shouldn't need to open the ports specifically to an IP address, but the IPSec gateway is 118.149.14.20."

Consequently I have tried to set port triggering in my router to get ports 500 and 4500 to open when required by wifi calling but when I try to do this as a custom set up i get the message "Add port triggering failed". This message also comes up if I try to set up one of the internally held application settings got from the drop down window in the web interface to the router.

Am I trying to go the right way to get wifi calling working through my modem or should I be trying something else?

Orcon totally messed things up again.

Monday 02:00 : internet still working

Monday 04:00 : no internet

Monday 18:00 : called Orcon to complain. First you hear a tape "Some Chch-customers experiencing issues, switch off "fibre box" [ONT] and modem, wait 15 minutes, switch ONT on again and then modem". Ok, did that, no change. Called again:

Me: no internet since 04:00

Orcon: yes, Christchurch wide network problems, not our fault, other ISPs al well, it't Enable's fault. We're trying to solve it.

Me: ok, do I get any compensation for the days on which I have no internet?

Orcon: no, no! It's Christchurch wide problem, not out fault. No compensation. Enable's fault.

Me: I don't care whose fault it is but it's certainly not my fault and I'm not paying for a service I'm not getting.

Orcon: ok, I put you on hold and talk with boss................. hello? ok, you get compensation, call us when working again and we calculate credit

Me: ok

Orcon: but we really try to fix as soon as possible.

Me: "we?" but you said it was enable's fault?

Orcon: yes, yes, we, all ISP work with enable to fix problem

Me: sure. Ok, thanks.

Monday 18:30 : checked enable website via mobile phone, no mention of network problems, called friend living close by and also on fibre (though not Orcon), no problems there. So doesn't seem to be an enable problem after all. Has to be Orcon.

Monday 19:00 : called Orcon again:

Me: It's not enable, it looks like it's really just Orcon. Also modem says it's connected via IPv4 but there's just no traffic. Internet light on NF4V is on, DSL light is flashing. No phone.

Orcon: Yes, no, indeed, not enable's fault, that already fixed. Sounds like authentication problem. You might need to reset NF4V

Me: I hate doing that because it will lose all my settings etc. but ok, I will do a factory reset.

Orcon: yes, please check, some customers have problem, other customers don't. Just wait till fixed.

Monday 19:15 : did factory reset. No fix. Again, it shows it's connected via IPv4 but no traffic. Same authentication issue as before?

Tuesday 11:00 : still no internet, it's been 31 hours without now. It's not an enable problem, it's an ORCON problem. They seem to have screwed up again like they do so often. How can they not fix what clearly is a configuration/authentication problem somewhere down the line within 31 hours. Have really had it with Orcon now. Looking to switch to another provider.

Orcon mobile plans - monthly billing for 'prepaid'?

Looking at Orcons blurb on their mobile phone plans I see this: "With Orcon Mobile you have the benefits of a prepay mobile service, with the convenience of being billed on your monthly Orcon invoice."

How can you be billed monthly (usually called 'post-paid') for a pre-paid service?

What am I missing here...

Hi

So how is this deal. You pay half price for 6 month for a 100/20 UFB, 12 month contract. Does Orcon put you on a congested line or low priority line for the first six months to make up for the price. How does it work.? Is it worth taking the deal.

Also I am in wellington, lower hutt. Any Orcon users can give some feedbacks. how is their speed at peak times and their service.

Thanks

Is this what VDSL is like?

Just moved into a new property and was downgraded from Fibre to VDSL, I run a speed test and get 20.01Mbps download and 1.12 Mbps upload, is this expected? I'm sure at one stage that is what I was getting on normal ADSL2+

I have no landline or anything else plugged into the phone sockets other than the Orcon router.

I have opened a case with Orcon to ask for help but would like to know if this is expected speeds or if something can be done to improve it?

Port filtering changes

Hi all,

We wanted to give you a heads up about a change on our network to protect our customers from cyber attacks. Starting this week, we'll begin blocking inbound traffic (TCP/UDP) on a range of ports for some of our customers in the South Island. The change will be rolled out to the rest of our customers at a later date.

Important note: this won't affect your normal internet browsing, video streaming, gaming or email services. If you run onsite email servers, web servers, or remotely access your router, you might be impacted by this change.

If you are impacted, you'll easily be able to revert the changes yourself by turning off port filtering in the My Orcon customer portal once the functionality goes live this week.

For a full list of affected ports, visit: https://help.orcon.net.nz/hc/en-us/articles/360005168154-Port-Filtering

Feel free to fire us any questions!

Cheers,

Using DSL-AC68U as a wireless router with Orcons fiber modem.

Hey guys.

I know very little but I'm trying to learn.

Recently had fiber installed and everything runs great but people upstairs are complaining about crappy internet.

Wired, I'm getting 950/500mbps. The modem that Orcon gave me just doesn't have the range and my upstairs wifi extender has proved unreliable.

The Orcon modem is NF18ACV-04.

I've been using my old DSL-AC68U plugged directly into the ONT. It hits the whole house and has stopped all complaints.

This would be the end of it for most people but I'm not happy. With the ASUS I've lost 150Mbps on the download (wired) and my ping to my favorite server has gone from a rock solid 31-32ms (pretty good considering it's in aussie) to a wavering 43-50ms. I also notice when testing the wifi speed that upload is significantly faster than download.

What I want to ask is...How can I use the Orcon modem for my ethernet connected PC and use the asus for wifi?

I've plugged the Orcon modem back in and turned off wifi and tried connecting the asus router to it via a WAN port. I get an IP conflict.

Both modems are 192.168.1.1. when I follow prompts to get a new IP, nothing happens.

Please help, I don't know what I'm doing.
